The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, has taken steps toward establishing a new campus at Kenyasi in the Ahafo Region following approval from the Ministry of Education.

A delegation from the university, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Richard Kwasi Amankwah, paid a courtesy call on the Omanhene of Kenyasi No. 2, Odeneho Dadieko Kwabena Nsiah Ababio, to discuss progress on the project and assess readiness for its implementation.

The meeting brought together traditional authorities, government officials, and representatives of the Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADEF), including the Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon. Charity Gardiner, and the District Chief Executive, Hon. Hafiz Dauda.

The Omanhene expressed strong support for the project, describing the establishment of the campus as a long-standing aspiration. He outlined existing infrastructure on the proposed site, including lecture blocks, laboratories, hostel facilities, and other developments aimed at supporting academic activities.

He also indicated plans to expand facilities further, including the construction of additional hostel accommodation to support future student intake.

The Ahafo Regional Minister and the District Chief Executive both pledged government and institutional support, noting that the campus would expand access to tertiary education and create opportunities for young people in the region.

Prof. Amankwah assured stakeholders of UMaT’s commitment to delivering quality education and said the university would begin with certificate programmes before fully scaling up academic operations. He added that the campus aligns with UMaT’s strategic goal of expanding access to mining and related disciplines.

Following the meeting, the delegation toured the proposed campus site to assess infrastructure, including lecture halls, laboratories, offices, and student accommodation facilities.

The inspection also identified areas requiring further development, such as teaching equipment, logistics, security, and utilities needed to meet academic standards.

Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating to ensure the successful establishment and operation of the Kenyasi campus, which is expected to enhance access to higher education and support regional development.
