Education Minister Considers Ban on Teachers Posting Students on Social Media

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu says he is considering a ban on teachers recording and posting students on social media platforms such as TikTok during and around school activities.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, the Minister said the issue had become a growing concern, particularly as some teachers involve students in social media trends during school hours.

His comments followed concerns raised by a listener about teachers turning students into online content, which could distract from learning and raise questions about students’ privacy and protection.

Mr Iddrisu said he is expected to attend a national conference in Sunyani focused on addressing indiscipline in Ghana’s secondary schools, where the issue of phone use by both students and teachers is expected to receive attention.

“I’m likely to pronounce a ban on that,” he said when asked about teachers posting students online.

The Minister said the government would consider appropriate measures to regulate the use of phones by students and teachers, stressing the need to maintain discipline and protect the school environment.

He also said the government was examining broader concerns about student indiscipline, including incidents involving weapons, violence against teachers and other forms of unacceptable behaviour in schools.

The proposed restriction on teachers’ social media activity is expected to form part of wider efforts to strengthen discipline, professionalism and student protection in Ghana’s schools.
