The Federation of Ghana Medical Laboratory Students’ Associations (FG-MELSA) has petitioned the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) to review the 2026 induction fees, extend the registration deadline and reconsider the requirement for graduates to purchase new laboratory coats.
In a petition dated October 10, 2026, FG-MELSA expressed concern that the announced fees and short registration period could place additional financial pressure on newly qualified medical laboratory graduates preparing to begin their professional careers.
The council’s announced fees are GH¢500 for first-degree graduates, GH¢450 for diploma graduates and GH¢650 for graduates of six-year professional programmes.
FG-MELSA said the registration notice was issued on October 8, with the portal opening on October 9, leaving graduates with limited time to raise the required funds and complete the process. It has therefore requested an extension of the registration and payment deadline by at least two to three weeks.
The association has also appealed to the council to allow graduates to use suitable laboratory coats obtained during their training, provided they meet the required professional standards. It argued that requiring graduates to purchase new coats could create additional costs where existing coats are already acceptable.
In addition, FG-MELSA has called for greater clarity on the basis for the induction fees and proposed engagement between the council and student representatives to discuss the concerns and identify possible solutions.
The petition was signed by FG-MELSA President Iddrisu Tijani and copied to the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, the Profession Specific Committee, the National Union of Ghana Students and the National Health Students’ Association of Ghana.
FG-MELSA said it recognises the council’s responsibility to regulate allied health professionals but wants the arrangements reviewed to ensure graduates have a fair opportunity to participate in the induction and oath-swearing ceremonies without avoidable financial and administrative difficulties.
The association has urged the council to communicate its decision before the registration deadlines expire, noting that some graduates have already made payments.
