KNUST Partners with Google for Education to Deploy Gemini AI Across University

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, through its E-Learning Centre, has partnered with Google for Education to deploy Google Gemini AI tools across the university community.

Under the partnership, Google will provide 95,000 Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals licences, giving students, academic staff and administrative staff access to Gemini and Gemini Notebook.

The initiative is expected to strengthen KNUST’s digital learning infrastructure by integrating AI-powered tools into teaching, learning, research and administrative activities across the university.

KNUST’s University Information Technology Services (UITS) has configured directory integration and Single Sign-On (SSO), allowing members of the university community to access Google services using their existing KNUST credentials without creating separate accounts.

According to the University, Gemini and Gemini Notebook are being provided under Google’s Core Services framework, under which institutional research data, student records and operational data are not used to train public AI models. Access is restricted to authorised members of the KNUST community.

The partnership will also include a capacity-building programme to support the effective adoption of the AI tools.

Virtual training sessions for faculty members are scheduled to begin in late September 2026, while an in-person Gemini Academy is planned for November 2026 to train selected educators and technical staff on the use of AI in teaching and research.

Google and KNUST technical teams are also working towards integrating Gemini into the University’s Moodle-based Learning Management System (LMS).

The partnership was initiated and led by Ing. Prof. Emmanuel Kofi Akowuah, Director of the KNUST E-Learning Centre, who coordinated the collaboration.

The implementation was supported by Mr. Emmanuel Afful, Director of UITS, with technical leadership from Mr. Richard Kason Ansah, System Analyst and Head of Systems.

Commenting on the partnership, Prof. Akowuah said the E-Learning Centre would continue to lead activities under the initiative to support KNUST’s transformation of teaching, learning, research and innovation through the adoption of advanced Google AI tools.

The partnership also extends to student innovation, with eligible student entrepreneurs and founders set to gain access to the Google for Startups Cloud Program and Google Cloud credits to support technology development and innovation.

The initiative marks another step in KNUST’s efforts to expand the use of emerging technologies and artificial intelligence across its academic, research and administrative ecosystem.
