The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has secured a US$45,864 grant to strengthen artificial intelligence education, research and innovation under the Africa AI Upskilling Programme.

KNUST is among selected higher education institutions from Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa participating in the programme, which aims to expand advanced AI education and build a sustainable AI ecosystem across Africa.

The initiative is being implemented by FATE Foundation in partnership with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), with support from Google.org.

Through the programme, KNUST will have access to the Google DeepMind AI Research Foundations Curriculum, alongside technical and academic support designed to strengthen AI teaching and applied research.

The grant will support the University’s implementation of the programme and help build institutional capacity for AI education. Prof. Eric Appau Asante, the project lead and primary programme contact for KNUST, will coordinate the University’s participation with relevant academic units, AI Champions, Teaching Assistants, University Management and programme partners.

The initiative is expected to expand opportunities for students and researchers to develop skills in emerging AI technologies while encouraging collaboration across different academic disciplines.

KNUST says the programme supports its broader focus on innovation, digital transformation and globally relevant education, with plans to explore how lessons from the initiative can contribute to the University’s wider academic and innovation ecosystem.
