KTU Suspends SRC Activities Indefinitely After 10 Arrested Over Alleged Cannabis-Infused Products

Koforidua Technical University (KTU) has suspended all Students’ Representative Council (SRC) activities indefinitely following the arrest of 10 people in connection with the alleged production and sale of cannabis-infused drinks and ice cream during the University’s SRC Week celebrations.

The decision was announced in a statement issued on August 5, 2026, by the University’s Head of Public Affairs, Macclean Lovelace-Dodoo. The arrests were made by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) on Saturday, August 1.

According to KTU Management, seven of those arrested are students of the University, while the other three are not affiliated with the institution as students. The suspects are currently being held at NACOC’s National Headquarters in Accra and are assisting with investigations.

The University said it conducted inquiries with various security agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding the arrests and subsequently visited the affected students.

KTU clarified that the incident occurred during SRC Week, rather than Hall Week as had been reported by some media outlets.

Management strongly condemned the alleged production and sale of the cannabis-infused products, describing the reported conduct as inconsistent with the University’s standards and code of conduct.

As part of its immediate response, the University has placed an indefinite suspension on all SRC activities and established a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The committee is expected to examine the matter and propose measures aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.

KTU Management also reminded students that involvement in such conduct constitutes an offence under Article 15 (vi) of the KTU Students’ Handbook.

The University said parents of the affected students have been contacted and appealed to other parents to remain calm while investigations continue.

KTU further assured the University community that it is cooperating with NACOC and other relevant authorities as investigations into the incident proceed.
