Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto Assumes Office as UCC Vice-Chancellor

Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto has officially assumed office as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), beginning a four-year tenure focused on institutional growth, research excellence and improved student outcomes.

Prof. Aheto was formally invested in Cape Coast, succeeding the previous administration and taking responsibility for steering the university from 2026 to 2030.

In outlining his vision for the university, the new Vice-Chancellor said his administration would pursue a more sustainable and results-oriented approach to managing UCC while preserving its academic and research traditions.

He identified transparency, accountability, collaboration and effective monitoring as essential to achieving the objectives of his administration.

A major component of his agenda is strengthening the university’s financial position through sustainable financing and increased resource mobilisation. He also intends to deepen research funding from public, private and development partners to support institutional development.

Prof. Aheto’s strategic focus also covers governance, staff welfare and human resource development, with emphasis on retaining skilled personnel and creating an environment that supports academic excellence.

On teaching and learning, he plans to promote transformative educational experiences and expand the university’s digital culture to improve student success and employability.

Research and innovation will also feature prominently under his administration, with plans to expand academic programmes, strengthen knowledge transfer and deepen partnerships involving industry, development organisations, entrepreneurship and policy engagement.

His vision further places emphasis on diversity, equity, gender inclusion and environmental sustainability, with the aim of creating a more inclusive academic community.

The Vice-Chancellor’s agenda will be implemented through five strategic areas under the Vice-Chancellor’s Strategic Focus (VCSF), covering financing and resource mobilisation, governance and staff development, research and academic expansion, teaching and digital transformation, and diversity and environmental well-being.

Because his four-year tenure extends beyond the university’s current Corporate Strategic Plan, which runs from 2023 to 2027, Prof. Aheto said his administration would begin a review of the plan. The review is expected to inform a new corporate strategy covering 2028 to 2032.

Prof. Aheto brings extensive academic and administrative experience to the position. He joined UCC’s Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences as a lecturer in 2009 and subsequently served as Head of the department. During his tenure, he played a leading role in the establishment of the Centre for Coastal Management and later became its first Director.

He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2017 and attained the rank of Professor in 2020. In December 2024, he was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor of UCC and became Acting Vice-Chancellor in September 2025 before his substantive appointment as Vice-Chancellor on May 15, 2026.

An environmental scientist by training, Prof. Aheto holds a PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Bremen in Germany. He has also published more than 50 peer-reviewed academic papers and has received recognition for his contribution to teaching and academic service.

With his administration now underway, attention will turn to how the new Vice-Chancellor translates his strategic vision into measurable improvements across teaching, research, governance, financing and the overall student experience at UCC.
