Award-Winning UG Lecturer Dr. Nancy Myles B. Gyamfi Opens Up on Her Journey, Teaching Philosophy and Advice to Students

Three-time Best Lecturer award winner at the University of Ghana, Dr. Nancy Myles B. Gyamfi, has shared the inspiring story behind her academic journey, her passion for philosophy and the principles that have shaped her relationship with students.

Speaking in an interview on 30 Minutes with Your Lecturer by Voice of Legon, Dr. Gyamfi reflected on her upbringing in Accra, her educational journey through Holy Child School and the University of Ghana, and how she eventually became one of the institution’s most admired lecturers.

Although she never planned to become a philosopher, she explained that her natural curiosity, commitment to critical thinking and passion for solving problems gradually led her into the discipline. She credited mentors at the University of Ghana for encouraging her to pursue philosophy after excelling academically.

Dr. Gyamfi described philosophy as a discipline that equips individuals with critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills that can be applied across fields including law, business, medicine, politics and research.

Sharing what has made her popular among students, she said she believes teaching is built on mutual respect, empathy and continuous learning, stressing that she learns from her students just as they learn from her.

The award-winning lecturer also challenged the notion that academic grades alone define intelligence or future success. According to her, while grades remain important, they do not fully measure a person’s abilities or potential, encouraging students to pursue excellence while focusing on creating meaningful impact.

She further urged students to remain committed to their goals, embrace hard work and believe in their ability to achieve success regardless of their background.
