Prof. Bernard Kumi-Boateng Assumes Office as UMaT Vice-Chancellor

Professor Bernard Kumi-Boateng has officially assumed office as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa.

Prof. Kumi-Boateng takes on the leadership of the university with nearly two decades of experience in teaching, research, university administration and industry engagement.

Prior to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences and Environmental Studies and is a Full Professor of Geomatic Engineering. His career at UMaT has seen him occupy several leadership positions, including Dean of Students, Dean of Planning and Quality Assurance, Vice Dean of Students, Vice Dean of International Programmes and Head of three academic departments.

He has also served on the UMaT Governing Council, the University Appointments and Promotions Committee and numerous other institutional committees.

His professional experience extends beyond Ghana. He currently serves as an External Moderator for the Department of Geospatial and Space Technology at the University of Nairobi, a Visiting Professor at the University of The Gambia and an External Examiner for the International Institute for Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) in the Netherlands.

Prof. Kumi-Boateng has also contributed to education and professional development at the national and international levels. He served on Ghana’s National Committee of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) from 2013 to 2021 and was involved with its international examinations committees.

His work has included curriculum development, quality assurance and capacity-building initiatives for tertiary institutions in Ghana, as well as projects supported by organisations including the World Bank, GIZ and international development partners.

As a researcher and consultant, his areas of interest include project management, environmental management, cadastral surveying, drone surveying, resettlement and compensation, land access, sustainable community development and urban mining.

His research and consultancy activities have contributed to securing significant funding and consultancy engagements, with projects involving government institutions, mining companies, development organisations and international partners.

Prof. Kumi-Boateng is a Fellow of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors, the West African Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum and the Institute of Project Management Professionals, Ghana. He is also affiliated with several professional and technical organisations in Ghana and internationally.

His appointment comes at a time when UMaT continues to strengthen its position in mining, engineering, technology and related fields. With his background in academia, institutional administration, research and industry collaboration, Prof. Kumi-Boateng is expected to provide strategic leadership as the university pursues its development priorities.

He is also known for his engagement with students and professional development initiatives, including his role as Patron of the WAIMM Students Chapter at the Tarkwa campus, where he mentors students in the sector.

Prof. Bernard Kumi-Boateng becomes the latest academic leader to take charge of UMaT, bringing to the office extensive experience in university governance, research, professional practice and institutional development.
