Bank of Ghana Introduces Observership Programme to Give UG Students Insight into Monetary Policy
The Bank of Ghana has launched the Monetary Policy Committee Educational Observership Programme (MPC-EOP) to provide students with firsthand exposure to how monetary policy decisions are made.

The initiative, introduced during the 131st Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Meetings, hosted 12 students from the University of Ghana and the University of Ghana Business School, allowing them to observe technical presentations, attend the MPC press briefing and engage with the Governor and members of the Committee.

The programme forms part of the Bank’s efforts to improve public understanding of monetary policy while bridging the gap between classroom theories and real-world economic decision-making.

Participants said the experience gave them a deeper appreciation of the processes behind setting the Monetary Policy Rate, noting that decisions are based on detailed analysis of factors including inflation trends, economic data and inputs from various sectors.

One student, Emanuela from the University of Ghana Business School, said the programme helped her understand that concepts taught in economics and finance classrooms are directly applied in shaping national policies.

Another participant highlighted that presentations from sectors such as agriculture and rural communities showed how different parts of the economy contribute to policy discussions and inflation analysis.

The Bank of Ghana said the MPC Educational Observership Programme is aimed at nurturing future economists, policymakers and professionals with a practical understanding of central banking.
