Lecturers at the University of Ghana (UG), University of Cape Coast (UCC), and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have signalled a possible strike over what they describe as government’s failure to honour agreed conditions of service.
In a letter dated April 29, 2026, to the National Labour Commission (NLC), the University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (UTAG) indicated plans to withdraw all teaching and related services, noting that the issues had already been adjudicated with agreements reached. However, the association accused government of failing to comply despite several reminders.
UTAG cited unpaid promotion arrears—some dating back to the 2019/2020 academic year—and the non-implementation of revised conditions of service as key concerns, warning that the situation continues to cause hardship among members.
The association added that efforts to resolve the matter through official channels have not yielded results, leaving withdrawal of services as the remaining option. It is demanding exemption from the three-month cap on promotion arrears, full implementation of revised conditions of service with retroactive effect, and payment of all outstanding entitlements.
UTAG says it will begin processes to activate the strike in line with its constitution if the concerns are not addressed.
