DGE-UEW Discusses Africa's Geopolitics and Development Challenges with CCU
On May 23, 2025, the Department of Geography Education at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) hosted a delegation from Coastal Carolina University (CCU), USA, for an academic exchange. Dr. Victor Owusu led the interaction with a detailed lecture on Africa’s geopolitical, environmental, and socio-economic challenges.
Dr. Owusu highlighted Africa’s paradox of resource wealth and underdevelopment, attributing it to colonial legacies, poor resource management, and political instability. He emphasized the Sahel region’s vulnerability and the socio-economic importance of countries like Nigeria.
Focusing on Ghana, Dr. Owusu criticized the country’s overdependence on raw exports and environmental degradation from small-scale mining and oil drilling. He stressed the decline in agriculture and called for sustainable, visionary leadership and industrial reinvestment.
The session ended with a call to prioritize sustainability to avoid the pitfalls of mismanaged resource wealth, reinforcing UEW’s commitment to fostering critical discussions on national and continental development.
