GES Temporarily Shuts Down Schools Affected by Violence in Upper East Region
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced emergency safety measures following recent violent attacks at three Senior High Schools in the Upper East Region: Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS. The attacks, which occurred between 20th and 26th July 2025, tragically claimed student lives, caused injuries, and led to major destruction of school property.
In a press release dated 29th July 2025, the GES expressed its condolences to the affected families and communities. As a key safety measure, the Service has temporarily closed all schools facing violent threats to ensure the protection of students and staff.
GES is actively working with the Ministry of Education, WAEC, and regional authorities to implement special arrangements for SHS 3 students to sit for their WASSCE exams under safe conditions. Discussions are ongoing to provide secure exam centres.
For SHS 1 and 2 students, alternative learning solutions are being explored. Counselling support will also be strengthened to help both students and staff recover from the trauma caused by these incidents.
The GES also acknowledged the swift intervention by the Ministry of Interior in evacuating students and reiterated its commitment to collaborating with security agencies to maintain safety across all campuses.
The statement ended with a call to all stakeholders, including parents and community leaders, to help preserve peace and discipline within the education system.
