COVID-19 Surge Hits University of Ghana: 107 Confirmed Cases, Health Minister Responds
A COVID-19 outbreak has emerged at the University of Ghana, Legon, with 316 suspected cases and 107 confirmed, as announced by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh on July 1, 2025. The surge, linked to the Omicron sub-variant, stems from recent Hall Week celebrations where safety protocols were ignored. No hospitalizations or deaths have been reported, and the situation is under control.
The outbreak, confined to the university, was detected through Ghana’s disease surveillance system and confirmed by the Noguchi Memorial Institute. “This is not a new virus. The Omicron variant spreads fast but is mostly mild,” the Minister told Parliament, urging adherence to preventive measures like mask-wearing and hand hygiene.
The Ministry of Health has deployed a response team, bolstered resources at Legon Hospital and the Student Clinic, and suspended all university events. The Ghana Health Service is enhancing testing and monitoring, with vaccines being secured for vulnerable groups. The public is urged to stay vigilant as flu cases also rise seasonally.
