Breaking News: Bawku Senior High School Closes After Student’s Fatal Shooting
Bawku Senior High School (BAWSEC) in Ghana’s Upper East Region has been temporarily shut down after a 19-year-old final-year student, Imoro Mohammed Nakiya Kundima, was killed on campus Saturday evening, July 26, 2025. Suspected armed Kusasis scaled the school’s wall, dragged Kundima from his dormitory, and shot him around 8:30 PM, in an attack possibly tied to the Bawku ethnic conflict.
The Upper East Regional Police are investigating, with no arrests yet. A curfew from 2:00 PM to 6:00 AM has been imposed in Bawku to prevent further violence. The school’s closure aims to ensure safety amid heightened tensions, following a similar deadly attack at Nalerigu Senior High School the same night.
Parents are advised to keep students home, with boarding students under tight security. The government urges calm as the Bawku conflict continues to fuel regional unrest.
