President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will not fund supporter travel to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, citing fiscal caution and recommendations from the Dzamefe Report on past mismanagement of resources in international football campaigns. The report cautions against using public funds to cover costs that could be substantial and difficult to justify to taxpayers.
Mahama highlighted that transporting and accommodating just 200 supporters could cost close to US $2 million, a burden the state is unwilling to bear given competing national priorities. Under the decision, fans who wish to attend must rely on private funding, sponsorships or fundraising efforts instead of government support.
Stakeholders are now focusing on alternative mechanisms to enable fan attendance without dipping into the public purse, while the broader national discourse continues on balancing national pride with financial responsibility.
