The Prime Minister of Jamaica, Dr. The Most Honourable Andrew Michael Holness, has received a Ghanaian delegation in Kingston as part of ongoing efforts to deepen diplomatic, economic and cultural relations between the two countries. During the meeting, Prime Minister Holness expressed profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana for their generous assistance and solidarity following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, describing Ghana’s support as timely and deeply meaningful to the Jamaican people.

According to the Prime Minister, Jamaica will forever remember Ghana’s kindness during the difficult period. The discussions also covered several strategic areas of cooperation, including plans for Ghana to send qualified teachers and nurses to Jamaica later this year under a special labour exchange agreement aimed at addressing workforce gaps and strengthening human resource development.

Both countries further agreed to begin processes toward a Ghana–Jamaica Defence Cooperation Agreement, reflecting a shared commitment to security collaboration and mutual support. In addition, the talks explored business and investment opportunities for Ghanaian companies, as Jamaica prepares to embark on a major infrastructural transformation under Prime Minister Holness’ vision to “build back better.”

On the international front, Prime Minister Holness pledged Jamaica’s full support for President Mahama’s proposed United Nations resolution seeking to declare the transatlantic slave trade the greatest crime against humanity and to demand reparations. He also expressed a strong desire to visit Ghana in the near future, describing the country as the “motherland,” while Ghana extended an open invitation to host him soon.
