UCC Minority Caucus Rejects SRC Decision to Reduce Student Data Package

UCC Minority Caucus Rejects SRC Decision to Reduce Student Data Package
Minorities at UCC Parliament
The Minority Caucus in the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Parliament has openly rejected the decision by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) to reduce the monthly 10GB data package allocated to students. The caucus argues that the reported reduction to between 5GB and 7GB is insufficient, especially at a time when academic activities increasingly depend on stable and affordable internet access.

According to the Minority Caucus, many students rely on the data package for essential academic work, including attending online lectures, conducting research, completing quizzes, submitting assignments, and participating in virtual seminars and webinars. They maintain that reducing the data allocation could negatively affect students’ academic performance, particularly those who cannot afford to purchase additional data.

The caucus further questioned the SRC President’s campaign promise to maintain the 10GB monthly data package, asking whether the financial realities and sustainability of the initiative were fully assessed before the promise was made. While they acknowledged that the SRC may be facing financial constraints, the Minority stressed that such a significant decision should not be taken without broad consultation.

They are therefore calling on the SRC leadership to reconsider the reduction or, at the very least, engage students and UCC Parliament transparently on the matter. The Minority Caucus believes that open dialogue and accountability will help restore trust and lead to a more balanced solution that protects students’ academic interests while addressing the SRC’s financial concerns.
