Ghana and China have signed a US$30 million grant agreement to support the construction of a university in Damongo, a move aimed at expanding access to tertiary education and strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The agreement was signed during a meeting between Ghanaโs Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa. Speaking on behalf of President John Mahama and the people of Ghana, Dr. Forson expressed gratitude to Ambassador Tong for his contributions to GhanaโChina relations during his tenure, noting that his time in Ghana coincided with the successful conclusion of two major grant agreements: funding for a multipurpose market in Aflao and the Damongo university project.
Dr. Forson emphasized the historical partnership between Ghana and China, dating back to the era of former President Kwame Nkrumah and Chairman Mao, highlighting the significant impact of Chinese investment and development assistance on Ghanaโs economy. He also raised the importance of deepening economic cooperation by addressing exchange losses in bilateral trade, proposing the use of the Ghanaian cedi and the Chinese yuan (RMB) for direct trade, a measure he said would be pursued at the policy level in consultation with the Bank of Ghana.
Ambassador Tong thanked the Finance Minister for the support he received during his tenure, congratulated Ghana on its improving economic performance, and expressed pride in the strong and enduring partnership between the two countries, particularly noting the tangible outcomes achieved in development cooperation.
The grant is expected to facilitate the construction of state-of-the-art facilities at the Damongo university, providing increased access to higher education and fostering closer educational collaboration between Ghana and China.
