Ghana introduces optional military training for national service personnel starting 31 August 2025
The Government of Ghana, through the National Service Authority (NSA) and in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces ( GAF), is set to implement the national service emergency response readiness programme (nserrp) from August 31, 2025. the initiative, which is voluntary, aims to instill discipline, patriotism, leadership, and physical readiness in prospective national service personnel.
The programme was first announced by President John Dramani Mahama during his maiden state of the nation address to parliament on February 27, 2025. it aligns with the National Service Authority act, 2024 (act 1119), which seeks to strengthen the national service scheme and empower ghanaian youth beyond academic qualifications.
In a statement signed by the acting Director-General of the NSA, Felix Gyamfi, the authority confirmed that applicants interested in joining the six-week military training were required to opt in during the online registration period, which ran from june 17 to July 1, 2025.
The minister for youth development and empowerment, george opare addo, clarified at a press briefing that the programme is not about militarisation, but rather about shaping youth for leadership and national development. the training includes basic military drills, emergency response tactics, teamwork, and civic education.
For the 2025/2026 service year, about 130,000 graduates from accredited tertiary institutions will be deployed to public and private institutions. the nsa has already issued pin codes to qualified individuals for enrollment. More updates on training centers and implementation details are expected in the weeks ahead.
