UDS responds to misleading media reports linking campus to murder case
The University for Development Studies (UDS) has issued an official statement clarifying misinformation spreading across traditional and social media platforms. The reports involve the life sentencing of Mr. Salifu Nurudeen, a former student, for the murder of Mr. Wumpini Mohammed Zakiu.
In a release dated August 1, 2025, UDS expressed concern about how some stories have been framed to suggest that the incident happened on its Nyankpala Campus during academic activities. The university emphasized that such claims are false and misleading.
The university clarified three key points:
1. The incident did not happen on any UDS campus. 2. At the time of the crime in September 2023, the university was officially on break, and all students had returned home. 3. The crime took place off-campus, entirely outside the university’s jurisdiction.
The university noted that the use of its gate’s image in certain media posts contributed to public misunderstanding, and such practices could damage the reputation of UDS.
UDS urged bloggers, influencers, and media outlets to exercise more care and responsibility in their reporting. According to the statement, sensationalized headlines and misleading visuals not only erode public confidence but can also affect the university’s image and the trust of stakeholders.
The school also reassured the public that all campuses remain safe and that strong security protocols are in place. It expressed sympathy to the bereaved family while calling for truth-based narratives going forward.
The statement closed with an appeal to the media to help protect the values of truth, accuracy, and constructive dialogue in reporting.
