Ghana Faces 20% Transport Fare Hike Starting August 8
The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has declared a 20% fare increase for all public transport services, effective August 8, 2025. This adjustment will impact shared taxis, intra-city trotros, long-distance buses, and haulage trucks across the country. The decision comes in response to escalating operational costs, including a new GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy that has driven an 8% rise in fuel prices. Worsening road conditions have also spiked vehicle maintenance costs, while the high price of spare parts continues to burden operators.
In May 2025, fares were reduced by 15% due to lower petroleum prices, but the GRTCC says the economic relief was short-lived, necessitating this reversal. The Council has appealed to commuters and operators for cooperation to ensure a smooth transition to the new fare structure. Social media posts on X reflect growing public awareness of the upcoming changes. Commuters are encouraged to confirm revised fares with local transport providers.
