The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced plans to establish a committee to review all school celebrations, including post-graduation ceremonies and speech and prize-giving days, in a bid to develop standardised guidelines for schools nationwide.
The Director-General of GES, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, reaffirmed the immediate ban on lavish post-examination celebrations on Senior High School campuses, describing such practices as inconsistent with the values of Ghana’s education system.
He noted that the directive prohibits the presentation of expensive gifts, including vehicles and money bouquets, on school premises, adding that parents who wish to offer such gifts may do so at home.
Warning school authorities to strictly comply with the directive, Prof. Davis stated: “If they can’t change the situation, the situation will change them. I will remove them from office,” stressing that heads of schools will be held accountable for enforcing the policy.
The GES further indicated that the committee will also examine reports of extravagant celebrations in both public and private schools to ensure uniform standards and uphold discipline across the education sector.
