Police arrest 39-year-old suspect, Michael Mensah over the murder of UCC student Innocentia Atsufui Avinu

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old suspect, Michael Mensah, in connection with the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, the University of Cape Coast (UCC) student who was recently found dead.

According to a police statement, the suspect was arrested by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP)'s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on 15th June 2026 at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast, following sustained intelligence-led operations.

Preliminary investigations indicate that on 11th June 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., the suspect, who claims to be a teacher by profession and also works as a driver, picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the UCC hostel enclave and allegedly took her to the seashore, where she was last seen.

The police stated that investigations are ongoing and assured the public that any further developments in the case will be communicated in due course.

The tragic incident has sparked widespread grief and concern within the University of Cape Coast community, with many calling for justice for the late Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.
