Students of Group 31 from the Tamale Campus of the University for Development Studies have undertaken a sanitation improvement project in Afania-Katiu in the Kassena-Nankana West District as part of the Third Trimester Field Practical Programme (TTFPP).
Following a community assessment, the students identified challenges affecting the community’s only public latrine, which serves more than 100 residents.
To improve the facility, the group installed a new metal trap door to enhance privacy and security and plastered the floor with concrete to improve hygiene and ease maintenance.
The intervention is expected to improve the safety and usability of the facility while supporting efforts to reduce sanitation-related health risks within the community.
The project highlights the practical impact of the TTFPP, a flagship UDS programme that combines academic learning with community service and development. Through the initiative, students apply classroom knowledge to address real-life challenges and contribute to improving living conditions in their host communities.
University officials say the project demonstrates the role of students in promoting sustainable development and creating positive change through community engagement.
