The Fiapre Circuit Court has sentenced a young man arrested for stealing streetlights and solar batteries at the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani to 12 months imprisonment after he failed to pay a GH¢5,000 fine.

The convict, who was found guilty of stealing campus infrastructure, is reported to have been linked to the disappearance of about 56 streetlights installed across different parts of the university.

According to reports, the stolen items also included solar batteries used to power the lighting system, raising concerns over security and safety on campus due to poor visibility in affected areas.

The suspect was arrested after he was allegedly caught attempting to continue the theft operations. His arrest initially drew the attention of students, some of whom confronted him before security personnel intervened to restore order.

Authorities are expected to continue investigations to determine whether the suspect acted alone or had accomplices in the theft of the university’s infrastructure.
