The Sunyani Technical University has engaged management of the Newmont Ahafo North Mine in Afrisipakrom to deepen collaboration between academia and the mining industry.

The visit is aimed at aligning technical education with industry requirements and improving practical training for students, particularly ahead of STU’s planned Mining Engineering programme.

General Manager Charles Bissue described the mine as a key investment by Newmont Corporation, stressing the importance of combining classroom knowledge with hands-on industry experience.

He noted that modern mining focuses on sustainability, safety, and community development, adding that the facility is prepared to support student internships and practical exposure.

Vice-Chancellor Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah called for a structured partnership to enhance research, training, and innovation between both institutions.

He proposed joint research, internships, staff exchanges, and the establishment of improved laboratory infrastructure to support practical learning.

Both parties expressed commitment to building a long-term partnership that will strengthen skills development and support Ghana’s mining and education sectors.
