A new film about the life of global music star Michael Jackson is set to be released in cinemas in 2026, and it is already expected to be a major box office hit. However, there is still a big debate about whether the film will tell his full and true life story.
The movie, titled Michael, is produced by Graham King, who also produced Bohemian Rhapsody, a successful film about the band Queen that earned over $900 million and won four Oscars.
That film also had production problems, including changes in actors and the removal of its first director, but it still became a huge success. Because of that success, the producer decided to make another big music biopic, this time about Michael Jackson.
The new film is directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan. The lead role is played by Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson. Other actors include Colman Domingo, Miles Teller, and Nia Long.
Michael Jackson is still one of the most famous music artists in the world, even after his death in 2009. He has millions of listeners on streaming platforms and his music is still very popular. He is also featured in stage shows like MJ The Musical and Michael Jackson ONE.
However, his life is also very controversial. During his lifetime, Jackson faced serious child abuse accusations. In 1994, he reached a settlement with one accuser, Jordan Chandler. In 2005, he was tried in court again but was found not guilty.
Because of this history, many people are now debating how the new film will present his life story. Jackson’s estate strongly believes he was innocent and says a jury already cleared him in court.
The film was first announced in 2023 and was planned to cover Jackson’s journey from his early days in the Jackson 5 to his rise as a global superstar. Early reports said the movie would also show important concerts like the “Bad” tour.
But later reports say the story changed. Some parts about the legal cases and scandals were reduced or removed during rewrites and reshoots in 2025. The extra filming also delayed the release to 2026 and increased the budget by millions of dollars.
Some reports say the film may now focus more on his music career and success, rather than the controversies in his life.
The debate was also influenced by the documentary Leaving Neverland, which featured serious abuse claims. Jackson’s estate strongly rejected the documentary, calling it one-sided.
The director of that documentary, Dan Reed, also said early scripts of the film contained mistakes and false information, but the estate rejected his claims, saying he had not seen the final version.
Even with all the controversy, many experts believe the film will still do very well because Michael Jackson remains one of the most popular music artists in the world.
Some analysts even believe it could perform better than Bohemian Rhapsody at the box office.
As the release date approaches, the film continues to raise one big question: will it show the full story of Michael Jackson, or only the parts that are easier for Hollywood to tell?
