The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has announced a temporary suspension of the processing of applications for institutional registration, effective immediately, as part of ongoing regulatory and quality assurance reforms in the tertiary education sector.
According to a statement issued on Friday, April 17, the decision is aimed at reviewing and refining existing guidelines to ensure alignment with global best practices in higher education regulation.
GTEC explained that the move is part of a broader effort to strengthen the country’s tertiary education system by improving quality assurance mechanisms and ensuring that institutional standards remain relevant in a rapidly evolving academic environment.
The Commission noted that the suspension will provide room for a comprehensive review of its regulatory framework to enhance efficiency, credibility, and consistency in the approval and oversight of tertiary institutions.
It further indicated that the decision is a proactive step to safeguard the integrity of higher education in Ghana and ensure that all institutions meet the required academic and operational standards.
During the suspension period, prospective applicants seeking to establish new tertiary institutions have been advised to consider the institutional accreditation pathway as an alternative route for approval and operation.
GTEC clarified that the suspension does not affect already accredited institutions, which will continue to operate under their existing accreditation terms without disruption.
The Commission also urged stakeholders to adhere strictly to the approved processes to avoid delays or complications in their applications once the review is completed.
GTEC expressed appreciation for the cooperation and understanding of stakeholders, emphasizing that the reforms are necessary to strengthen the quality and integrity of tertiary education in Ghana.
