Kekeli Afudego of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School has been named Ghana’s Top High School Mathematician for 2026, reinforcing the institution’s reputation as one of the country’s leading centres of academic excellence.
The recognition was awarded by the Mathematics Inspired Science and Engineering Foundation (MISE), an academic enrichment organisation focused on developing mathematical talent among senior high school students. The competition, organised in collaboration with the American Mathematics Olympiad (AMO), follows a rigorous assessment process designed to test precision, speed, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
Afudego emerged as the top candidate after progressing through a highly competitive selection process involving students from across the country. Participants underwent a series of examinations under strict supervision, with AMO providing certification and ensuring international assessment standards.
His achievement reflects both individual excellence and the strength of PRESEC’s academic system. Established in 1938, the school has built a strong legacy in science and mathematics, consistently producing top performers in national competitions, including the National Science and Maths Quiz.
MISE, in highlighting the significance of the award, reiterated its commitment to nurturing young talents and preparing students for advanced studies and international competitions. Through its programmes, the organisation continues to strengthen students’ problem-solving abilities and expose them to higher-level mathematical thinking.
Following his recognition, Afudego is expected to represent Ghana at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the world’s premier mathematics competition for high school students.
The achievement has been widely praised as a testament to dedication, discipline, and sustained academic preparation. It also serves as motivation for students nationwide, demonstrating that excellence is attainable through focus and consistent effort.
Organisers have also commended all participants for their performance and commitment, noting that competing at such a high level is an accomplishment in itself.
Afudego’s success adds to PRESEC’s long-standing tradition of academic distinction and highlights the growing potential of Ghanaian students on the global stage.
