The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has achieved a major medical milestone by successfully performing the country’s first laparoscopic gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgeries.
The historic laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery, first performed last year, marked a breakthrough in minimally invasive bariatric procedures in Ghana. Building on this success, UGMC carried out its first laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery on 12th March 2026.
The procedures were carried out by the UGMC surgical team, demonstrating advanced medical expertise and positioning the Centre as a leading institution for innovative surgical care in the country.
The University has congratulated the team for their dedication and skill, noting that these achievements continue to raise the UGMC flag higher in Ghana’s healthcare sector.
These groundbreaking surgeries provide patients with modern, less invasive treatment options for obesity and related health conditions, reflecting UGMC’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in the country.
