Dagbon Overlord Ya-Na Abukari II Passes Away
The Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Ya-Na Abukari II, has passed away, throwing the kingdom into mourning.

His death was officially announced on Monday, July 13, by the Head of the Dagbon Kingmakers, Kuga Naa Adam Abdulai II, following the performance of customary rites at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi. In keeping with Dagbon tradition, the announcement was preceded by the sounding of the traditional talking drum, signalling the passing of the Ya-Na.

Sources indicate that the late Overlord had travelled to South Africa for medical treatment after a short illness, where he died. However, the cause of death has not been officially disclosed.

Ya-Na Abukari II was enskinned in January 2019 after the successful implementation of the roadmap that resolved the long-standing Dagbon chieftaincy dispute. His reign became synonymous with peace, reconciliation, and unity, helping to restore stability to one of Ghana's oldest traditional kingdoms.

Beyond promoting peace, he championed constitutional reforms within the Dagbon Kingdom, supported community development initiatives, and oversaw the redevelopment of the historic Gbewaa Palace into a modern royal complex.

Traditional authorities have begun preparations for his burial in accordance with Dagbon customs. In line with tradition, his eldest son has been enskinned as Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Abukari, who will serve as Regent until a new Ya-Na is selected and enskinned.

The passing of Ya-Na Abukari II marks the end of a significant chapter in the history of the Dagbon Kingdom, with many remembering his reign for fostering lasting peace, strengthening traditional institutions, and advancing development across the kingdom.
