The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has inaugurated the J.K. Horgle Transport and Logistics Centre, a new research and training hub aimed at developing skilled professionals and strengthening collaboration between academia and industry.
The Centre was established to respond to the growing demand for experts in the transport and logistics sector by providing students and professionals with practical training, research opportunities, and industry-focused skills.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, said the Centre represents the University’s commitment to preparing graduates who can contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s growing logistics industry.
He explained that transport and logistics is one of the fastest-growing sectors globally and that Ghana is strategically positioned to become the logistics hub of West Africa due to its location, expanding trade activities, and the presence of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat.
According to Prof. Mawutor, the expansion of regional trade will create significant opportunities in areas such as freight forwarding, warehousing, supply chain management, and customs brokerage.
He noted that Ghana’s ports, particularly the Tema and Takoradi ports, already demonstrate the potential of the sector, handling more than 25 million tonnes of cargo annually while supporting trade with neighbouring countries including Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
The Vice-Chancellor said these developments represent opportunities for young professionals and entrepreneurs to create solutions and build careers within the transport and logistics industry.
Prof. Mawutor expressed confidence that the J.K. Horgle Transport and Logistics Centre will become a leading platform for research, innovation, and professional development, contributing to the growth of Ghana’s logistics sector and strengthening the connection between education and industry.
