The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has engaged the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition in discussions aimed at improving energy efficiency and advancing the University’s Green Sustainability Agenda through renewable energy solutions.
Led by Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, the University delegation met the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, to explore practical interventions that could help address UCC’s rising energy needs while promoting environmentally sustainable practices.
During the engagement, Prof. Aheto outlined several key requests, including support for the installation of solar power systems and solar-powered streetlights across major academic and residential areas on campus. He also appealed for assistance to complete the stalled Institute of Oil and Governance Building project, as well as intervention in the implementation of Cabinet-approved electricity bill exemptions for critical public institutions. Strengthening collaboration with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) was also highlighted as a priority.
In response, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the University’s transition toward renewable energy. He announced plans to replace existing streetlights on campus with solar-powered alternatives to improve both security and visibility.
He further indicated that lecture halls, laboratories, and administrative facilities would gradually be powered using solar and hybrid energy systems as part of a broader national effort to promote clean, reliable, and cost-effective energy across tertiary institutions. The Ministry also pledged to engage the Ministries of Finance and Education to explore additional support for energy-efficient infrastructure in universities nationwide.
The meeting brought together key officials from UCC and representatives from the Ministry and ECG, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable energy solutions and improved campus infrastructure.
