The University of Ghana has been ranked Ghana’s best university in the 2026 edition of the AD Scientific Index, reaffirming its dominance in academic research, citation impact, and scholarly influence.

The rankings, updated on 7 June 2026, evaluated 67 universities across Ghana using measurable indicators such as Total H-Index, citation counts, i10-Index scores, researcher performance, and institutional visibility. Unlike rankings that focus on reputation or history, the AD Scientific Index assesses universities based on the real-world research contributions and impact of their scientists.

Leading the national rankings, the University of Ghana placed 1st in Ghana, 11th in Africa, and 800th globally. The institution recorded 1,235 indexed scientists, including 52 researchers in the global top 10 percentile, 236 in the top 30 percentile, and 486 in the top 50 percentile. The achievement reinforces the university’s longstanding reputation as Ghana’s leading centre for research and academic excellence.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology secured the second position in Ghana, ranking 24th in Africa and 1,102nd worldwide. KNUST’s strong performance was driven by its contributions to science, engineering, medicine, and agricultural research. The university had 1,214 indexed scientists, with 30 researchers in the global top 10 percentile and 512 in the top 50 percentile.

The University of Health and Allied Sciences emerged as Ghana’s third-best university, ranking 49th in Africa and 1,688th globally. Despite having only 224 indexed scientists, the relatively young institution demonstrated impressive research intensity, with 14 researchers in the global top 10 percentile. Its position in the top three highlights the growing strength of specialised health-focused institutions in Ghana.

The University of Cape Coast ranked fourth nationally, followed by the University for Development Studies in fifth place. Both institutions continue to make significant contributions in teacher education, humanities, community development, and applied research.

Rounding out Ghana’s top ten universities were the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, Ghana Communication Technology University, University of Education, Winneba, University of Energy and Natural Resources, and CK Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences.

The rankings reveal the growing maturity and diversification of Ghana’s higher education sector. While traditional institutions continue to dominate, newer and specialised universities are increasingly establishing themselves through impactful research and innovation.

The 2026 AD Scientific Index also highlights the dominance of public universities in Ghana’s research landscape and reflects the country’s rising influence in knowledge creation, scientific discovery, and higher education across Africa.
