The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has been appointed Chair of the Worldwide Universities Network, a global alliance of leading research-intensive universities.

According to WUN, Professor Amfo was selected based on her distinguished academic record, leadership experience, and commitment to advancing international collaboration in higher education and research. Her appointment also reflects the Network’s dedication to diversity and global partnership.

Professor Amfo takes over the role after serving as Vice-Chair of the Network, where she played an active role in strengthening collaboration among member institutions and supporting shared research initiatives.

Speaking on her appointment, she described WUN as a powerful platform for global research collaboration and expressed her commitment to working with member universities to deepen partnerships and increase the impact of collaborative research.

She also highlighted the importance of Global North–Global South partnerships, noting that diverse perspectives and experiences are essential for addressing complex global challenges and ensuring that research outcomes remain relevant to communities around the world.

Professor Amfo succeeds Bill Flanagan, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Alberta, who previously served as Chair of the Network.

The University of Ghana has welcomed the appointment, describing it as recognition of Professor Amfo’s outstanding leadership and a reflection of the university’s growing influence in global research, innovation, and academic collaboration.

The Worldwide Universities Network consists of 24 research-intensive universities across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania, and South America, working together to address major global challenges through research, education, and capacity building.
