The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has organised an orientation programme for more than 1,000 students enrolled in the Government of Ghana’s One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), a national initiative aimed at equipping young people with digital and coding skills.

The programme seeks to train one million Ghanaians in in-demand technology skills to improve employability, entrepreneurship and participation in the digital economy.

Speaking at the orientation, Jerry John Kponyo, KNUST’s focal lead for the programme, highlighted the importance of digital skills development in preparing young people for opportunities in the global technology industry.

He noted that KNUST is serving as one of the programme’s implementation hubs through its Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, and the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab.

A total of 1,048 students have enrolled across the four centres, with participants expected to complete training programmes leading to industry-relevant certifications and digital credentials.

Programme coordinators indicated that measures are being put in place to support students who lack access to computers, while participants have also been encouraged to maintain discipline, follow structured study plans and remain committed throughout the training period.

The initiative is expected to help participants acquire practical digital skills and improve their prospects for employment in the rapidly growing technology sector.
