Ghana Water Limited Begins Controlled Spillage of Weija Dam Over Rising Water Levels
Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the controlled spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam after water levels rose above the maximum operating limit of 48 feet.

In a press release dated May 27, 2026, the company explained that all spill gates have been opened to release excess water in order to protect the structural integrity and ensure the safety of the dam.

Management noted that controlled spillage is a routine safety measure during the rainy season, usually undertaken when water levels exceed 45 feet to reduce pressure on the dam and prevent potential disaster.

GWL also indicated that the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast further heavy rains upstream, which is expected to increase inflows into the dam. As a result, the spillage exercise is expected to continue until water levels drop to a safe operating level, depending on rainfall patterns.

The company has therefore urged residents living downstream of the dam to evacuate vulnerable areas immediately to avoid loss of life and property.

It added that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and district assemblies are making arrangements to remove structures and clear obstructions that may block the free flow of water.

Ghana Water Limited assured the public of its commitment to safeguarding the dam while prioritising public safety, and called for full cooperation with all emergency directives from relevant authorities.
