President John Dramani Mahama has called on technical universities across the country to align their academic programmes with the government’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) agenda to strengthen skills development and support national growth.
Speaking at the 4th Biennial Applied Research Conference of Technical Universities in Takoradi, the President stated that technical universities should position themselves as key drivers of Ghana’s knowledge-based economy through practical training and stronger industry collaboration.
He stressed the need for institutions to focus on competence-based technical and vocational education that equips students with practical and industry-relevant skills while helping to address youth unemployment.
President Mahama also announced that government intends to allocate GH¢10 million to each of the country’s ten public technical universities under the 2027 budget to support infrastructure expansion, equipment acquisition and laboratory development.
He further revealed plans to establish additional technical universities in Jasikan and Techiman, alongside a proposed University of Science and Technology in the Savannah Region to expand access to higher education.
According to the President, government also intends to establish a dedicated TVET Fund to strengthen science and technical education and promote innovation across the country.
