The Governing Council of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has paid tribute to outgoing Vice Chancellor Richard Kwasi Amankwah for what it described as six years of transformative leadership and dedicated service to the institution.
The recognition was made during the university’s 2026 Mini Congregation held on May 23, where the Council highlighted his contributions to the growth and development of the university since assuming office in October 2020.
According to the Council, Professor Amankwah oversaw significant growth in student enrolment, with the university population increasing from over 2,000 to more than 17,000 students, expanding access to engineering and technology education.
The Council also commended his role in major infrastructural development, including the construction of academic and student facilities, expansion of learning resources, acquisition of vehicles and the introduction of income-generating initiatives.
Beyond infrastructure development, his leadership was recognised for promoting staff welfare, strengthening institutional unity and fostering an inclusive environment through his leadership approach.
The Council further noted that his tenure contributed significantly to enhancing UMaT’s visibility and reputation through partnerships, academic excellence, research and innovation.
According to the University, his leadership has positioned UMaT for continued growth and future development.
