A senior lecturer at the Department of Optometry and Visual Science of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has warned of rising cases of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), also known as digital eye strain, among Ghanaians.

Dr. Kwadwo Owusu Akuffo made the remarks during the third edition of Science Friday, where he described prolonged use of phones, laptops, and other digital devices as a growing threat to eye health.

He explained that excessive screen time reduces blinking, causes dry eyes, and places strain on the eyes through continuous close focus, glare, and poor posture.

According to him, symptoms commonly linked to the condition include eye strain, blurred vision, headaches, irritation, as well as neck and shoulder pain.

To reduce the risk, he encouraged the public to adopt the 20-20-20 rule by looking away from screens every 20 minutes at an object 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

He also advised users to maintain proper screen distance, ensure good lighting conditions, blink frequently, and wear correct prescription lenses where needed.

Dr. Owusu Akuffo further stressed that many vision problems are preventable through regular eye checks and early treatment.

He urged Ghanaians to take eye care seriously by adopting healthy habits and seeking professional attention before problems worsen.
