The University of Ghana has officially responded to a viral video circulating on social media that shows a member of its Safety and Security Services Directorate (SSSD) allegedly assaulting a young man during an arrest.

In a statement issued by its Public Affairs Directorate, the University confirmed that management has taken note of the footage and has already begun steps to investigate the incident thoroughly. Preliminary information gathered suggests that the individual involved in the incident is not a student of the University of Ghana, but rather a person who was reportedly apprehended by the security officer on suspicion of theft.

The University stressed that it maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of violence and misconduct, especially in situations involving staff interaction with members of the public. It further explained that its Consolidated Code of Conduct for Employees clearly defines acceptable behaviour for security personnel and outlines disciplinary measures for any breaches of conduct.

According to the statement, a full-scale investigation has been launched to establish the exact circumstances under which the incident occurred. Management assured that the process will be conducted fairly, transparently, and in accordance with established institutional procedures.

The University further indicated that if the officer involved is found guilty of misconduct or excessive use of force, appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken without hesitation. It also noted that such actions may include sanctions in line with university regulations as well as applicable laws of Ghana relating to assault, following due legal process.

Management reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline, protecting human rights, and ensuring that all security operations on campus are carried out professionally and responsibly.

The University of Ghana also appealed to the public to remain calm while investigations are ongoing, assuring that the institution will provide further updates as necessary once the full facts are established.

It concluded by reaffirming its dedication to accountability, justice, and the protection of both staff and members of the public who interact with the University community.
