Ghana has achieved a historic milestone with the adoption of UN Resolution A/80/L.48, declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialized chattel enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity. The resolution was emphatically supported by all 123 UN Member States, marking a significant step toward justice for over 12.5 million victims of the transatlantic slave trade.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed profound gratitude to the UN, the coalition of global supporters, and the people of conscience worldwide who championed Ghana’s cause. This achievement restores the humanity, dignity, and respect of Africans and honors the legacy of our ancestors.
The Ministry also commended the exceptional contributions of colleagues in New York, Addis Ababa, and Geneva, as well as technical experts and international partners, for their tireless efforts in advancing reparatory justice. President John Mahama was praised for his extraordinary leadership and unwavering commitment to this historic process.
Ghana has hailed this moment as a monumental victory for reparatory justice and a milestone in the global fight against historical injustices.
