Telecel Ghana has strengthened its long-standing partnership with the University of Ghana by donating a fully equipped 43-unit computer laboratory to support digital learning, research, and innovation.

The new ICT laboratory, commissioned as part of Telecel Ghana’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, features 43 computers, an 86-inch interactive touchscreen, dedicated internet connectivity, and air conditioning to provide students with a modern learning environment.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Chief Executive Officer of Telecel Ghana, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, said the facility is designed to give students the tools they need to learn, collaborate, innovate, and develop practical solutions to real-world challenges. She noted that the true impact of the investment would be measured by the lives transformed through the use of the laboratory and urged users to maintain the facility properly.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Ghana, Prof. Gordon Awandare, described the donation as a significant contribution to the University’s drive to enhance teaching and learning through technology.

According to him, the laboratory complements several ongoing digital transformation initiatives at the University, including classroom modernisation, hotspot comfort zones across campus, and the One Student One Laptop (1S1L) project.

Prof. Awandare thanked Telecel Ghana for the support, stating that the donation reflects the strong partnership between the telecommunications company and the University, as well as their shared commitment to advancing higher education.

Director of the University’s Information Technology Directorate (ITD), Ing. Francis Boachie, also highlighted the long-standing relationship between the two institutions, noting that their collaboration dates back to 2010. He expressed confidence that the partnership would continue to create more opportunities for students and staff.

Acting Director of Enterprise Business at Telecel Ghana, Mr. Nii Laate Lartey, revealed that the company currently provides dedicated high-bandwidth internet connectivity and multiple leased lines to the University’s campuses across Ghana. He added that more than 36,000 University of Ghana students currently benefit from Telecel’s tertiary data bundle packages.

He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to investing in network improvements and supporting teaching, learning, research, and innovation through continued collaboration with the University.

The commissioning ceremony concluded with a tour of the newly commissioned ICT laboratory, where University officials, Telecel executives, and student leaders inspected the facility and its equipment.
