Accra and other parts of southern Ghana are expected to experience more wet weather in the coming days, according to the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), following one of the most severe flooding incidents recorded in the capital this season.
In its latest weekly impact-based forecast covering June 29 to July 5, GMet indicated that rainfall will persist across the southern belt for much of the week, with only brief periods of relief before intensifying again toward the weekend.
For the next 24 hours, the agency predicts widespread rain with occasional thunderstorms along the coast, including Accra, which has been placed under a “be aware” risk category, while parts of the south-west are expected to experience even higher risk levels.
Midweek conditions are expected to ease slightly, with scattered showers and occasional bright spells offering temporary relief to affected communities. However, GMet warns that the situation is likely to deteriorate again by the weekend, with widespread rainfall and thunderstorms returning to the coastal areas and a “be prepared” alert issued—the second-highest risk level on its warning scale.
The agency explained that the “be prepared” warning indicates a high likelihood of significant weather impacts requiring active readiness from residents and authorities.
The outlook follows severe flooding on Monday that submerged roads and markets in Accra, disrupted transport systems, forced emergency rescues in several communities, and led to temporary shutdowns of key power infrastructure as well as postponement of examinations.
GMet says it will continue to monitor weather developments closely and provide updates as conditions evolve throughout the week.
