WhatsApp Begins Global Rollout of Usernames to Enhance Privacy
WhatsApp has begun the global rollout of usernames, introducing a new feature that will allow users to connect without sharing their phone numbers.

The company announced that users can start reserving usernames this week ahead of a gradual global rollout of the feature later this year. Once available, usernames will replace phone numbers in chats, giving users greater privacy while maintaining their existing WhatsApp accounts.

To start a conversation, users will need to know the exact username of the person they want to contact, as WhatsApp will not include a searchable username directory. The platform is also introducing an optional username key, adding an extra layer of privacy by requiring a unique code before someone can send a first message.

The update is expected to benefit individuals, businesses, and content creators by providing a consistent identity across Meta platforms while reducing the need to publicly share personal phone numbers.

Although usernames are now available for reservation, users will still need a phone number to register for WhatsApp, and the feature will be rolled out gradually across different countries in the coming months.
