The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the immediate handover of administrative authority at the University for Development Studies (UDS) from Prof. Seidu Al-hassan to the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Muniru Iddrisu, following concerns over delayed transition after the appointment of the new leadership.

Prof. Mohammed Muniru Iddrisu’s appointment took effect on 27 June 2026, but reports indicate that Prof. Seidu Al-hassan was still occupying office as of Sunday, 28 June 2026. This situation, according to GTEC, undermines the effective administration of the university.

The regulator has therefore instructed Prof. Al-hassan to immediately hand over to the new Vice-Chancellor and provide evidence of compliance. It further warned that failure to comply could compel the Commission to revoke his post-retirement contract arrangement.

GTEC also reminded the new Vice-Chancellor of existing public service regulations, including provisions that address extended absence from office as outlined by the Public Services Commission.

Prof. Seidu Al-hassan, the fifth Vice-Chancellor of UDS, is a Professor of Agricultural Economics and former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university. He previously served in various academic and administrative roles at UDS, including Head of the Department of Food Security and Climate Change and Director of the Institute for Continuing Education and Interdisciplinary Research.

He holds degrees from the University of Cape Coast and the University of Ghana, with a PhD in Agricultural Economics, and has built a career spanning teaching, research, and public service in areas including food security, sustainable agriculture, and climate change.

GTEC has emphasized that smooth leadership transition is critical to maintaining stability and effective governance within public universities.
