The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has partnered with Green Shift Initiative (GSI) Africa to promote sustainable transportation and increase awareness of electric vehicle (EV) technology among students, staff, and the wider university community.

The partnership was officially launched during a meeting between the University’s management, staff representatives, and officials from GSI Africa. As part of the collaboration, the two institutions will organise an electric vehicle exhibition on July 16 and 17, 2026, to educate the public on the benefits, affordability, and accessibility of electric mobility.

Speaking at the launch, UEW Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu, described the initiative as a timely step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. She said the growing global shift to electric vehicles presents an opportunity for universities to embrace environmentally friendly transport solutions and called for supportive government policies to make EVs more affordable.

She encouraged GSI Africa to continue engaging stakeholders and developing financing options that would make electric vehicles accessible to more people.

Representatives of GSI Africa explained that the initiative seeks to reduce dependence on fossil-fuel-powered vehicles by educating the public on the economic and environmental advantages of electric vehicles. According to the organisation, EVs have lower fuel and maintenance costs, making them a more cost-effective transportation option over time.

The organisation also revealed that it has partnered with financial institutions and vehicle dealers to provide flexible payment plans for prospective buyers.

During the upcoming exhibition, about ten electric vehicles from different manufacturers will be displayed, giving participants the opportunity to interact with experts, speak with dealers, learn about financing options, and experience test drives.

The programme concluded with an interactive discussion on electric vehicle ownership, financing, and maintenance, followed by a live demonstration of an electric vehicle.

The partnership reflects UEW’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and environmental responsibility while encouraging the adoption of cleaner transportation technologies in Ghana.
