Responsible communication and the fight against misinformation dominated discussions at the KNUST SRC PR Summit 2026, where communication experts urged young media practitioners and digital content creators to use their platforms ethically and professionally.
The summit, organised by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Student Representative Council (SRC) Public Relations Office under the 65th SRC Administration led by Shakir-Justice, was held at the Faculty of Law Auditorium. It brought together students, communication professionals, academics, and aspiring public relations practitioners to explore the role of strategic communication in the digital age.
Speaking at the event, KNUST’s Deputy Registrar in charge of University Relations, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, cautioned bloggers and digital content creators against sacrificing accuracy for speed. He noted that while digital platforms have made information more accessible than ever, they have also increased the spread of misinformation.
He urged bloggers to verify every piece of information before publication, stressing that credibility is built on truth and responsible reporting.
“Use your platforms to share positive and accurate information, not always the negative ones. People trust what they see on your pages, so don’t sacrifice the truth just because you want to be the first to publish,” he said.
Dr. Bekoe explained that responsible communication extends beyond reporting events. According to him, communicators have a duty to provide context, combat misinformation, protect institutional reputations, and contribute to national development through factual and balanced reporting.
The summit also featured presentations from Dr. Fortune Tella of KNUST’s Department of Language and Communication Sciences, Miss Thelma Tawiah, Secretary of the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), and career strategist Miss Bridget Maame Dentu, Founder of Amplifyra Media Services.
Delivering a presentation titled Communicating for Impact: The Power of Meaning in the Digital Age, Miss Dentu encouraged participants to intentionally shape the narratives they create, noting that communication influences how people are perceived.
“If you don’t intentionally communicate your identity, people will construct one for you,” she told participants.
Throughout the summit, speakers highlighted the importance of ethical communication, strategic storytelling, personal branding, and media responsibility, encouraging participants to become credible communicators capable of making a positive impact in the digital space.
