University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has issued a strong warning that lecturers across all 15 public universities will withdraw their services if government fails to sign an agreement on Conditions of Service by June 30, 2026.
The National Secretary of UTAG, Dr. Samuel Kingsford Seglah, explained that although several engagements have been held with government and agreements reached on key issues, the final signing required for implementation is yet to be completed.
He described the deadline as the Association’s final notice, stressing that continued delays would leave lecturers with no option but to embark on industrial action nationwide.
Dr. Seglah noted that lecturers are facing similar financial and family responsibilities as other workers and therefore expect government to honour agreed terms in good faith. He added that failure to resolve the impasse could significantly affect morale and the quality of teaching and learning across public universities.
Meanwhile, some students of the University of Ghana have appealed for urgent intervention, urging both UTAG and government to return to the negotiation table to prevent disruption of the academic calendar. They warned that students often bear the greatest impact of industrial actions and called for a swift resolution.
With the deadline approaching, attention now turns to ongoing efforts by stakeholders to prevent a nationwide strike that could disrupt academic activities across the country.
